When I was a kid, I used to love skiing in the trees. It takes a bit of bravado to do well and there is an added element of challenge. The problem is that I have been stuffed a few times. I have had a second mouth on my face that was stitched shut. Later in life, I thought, “I know…I’ll wear a full face mask. That’ll keep me safe!”. Wrong. I’ve ended up with a broken nose with a full face mask, also.

Those things aside, numerous people have died in tree wells. It is easy to fall into a hole and get covered with snow and that is it. This can happen at any local hill. It happens mostly in-bounds where the skier is not doing anything extreme.

All of that being said, I was having a great run and went into the trees on instinct. I should probably let you know that I don’t necessarily have the best instincts. I stopped for a moment to make sure I really wanted to be there. I briefly thought of my wife and two kids who were currently taking ski lessons. I thought it would be dumb if something happened and I didn’t show up to the lodge for lunch. I opted to leave the trees. The trail was 50 yards away and I decided to just cut over to it.

…That is when I got (log) jammed up and thanked my lucky stars….
